Swartland, South Africa
The Mullineux Syrah 2022 is one of the benchmark expressions of Swartland Syrah, bringing together the region’s distinctive soils and dryland vineyards into a wine of remarkable depth, perfume, and precision. Sourced from granite, schist, quartz, and iron-rich soils across the Swartland, this wine captures both power and elegance in equal measure.
The nose is intensely aromatic, with classic Swartland notes of blackberry, violet, and black olive tapenade, layered with hints of citrus rind and baking spice. On the palate, the wine is rich yet energetic, showing velvety tannins and a beautifully textured mid-palate. Dark fruit, savory complexity, and mineral freshness unfold in layers, while the quartz-derived parcels bring lift and vibrancy to the finish. The result is a Syrah of remarkable balance and age-worthiness.
This wine pairs beautifully with slow-roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, game meats, and earthy mushroom dishes.
- 100% Syrah
- Sourced from a combination of different soils: quartz-based soils from the Mullineux’s Kasteelberg vineyard, stony schist-based soils on the mid-slopes of Kasteelberg, decomposed granitic soils of the Paardeberg, and iron-rich soils north of Malmesbury
- Hand harvested in the early morning at each vineyard site
- Crushed 80% whole cluster to ensure the best expression of its unique Swartland terroir
- Cap management took place to encourage natural and gentle extraction during the indigenous fermentation and after four weeks
- The wine was pressed to 500L French barrels for 11 months
- The Syrah was then blended and aged for an additional ten months before bottling
